Orphans

Bram Ellens · sculptures in public space

  • art
  • audio

The Orphans are sculptures made from paintings that had nowhere left to go. Visual artist Bram Ellens collected them through second-hand shops and funeral directors: works by people who had died, too cherished to throw away but too uncomfortable to hang on a wall. He gave them a new form.

Between 2018 and 2021 the series travelled to exhibitions in Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Watou in Belgium, Zaanstad, and ultimately Sculpture in the City in London. Five of the sculptures were specially adapted for outdoor display.

For the outdoor exhibition Bram asked if I could design a process to collaboratively build a soundtrack. Using Max/MSP I built a set of live-configurable tools that let us create exactly the right unsettling feeling.
